Wheeling, West Virginia, 2022
A solitary man stands beneath the entrance of a fading former bank building in Wheeling, West Virginia. Above him, a neon sign announces “OPEN ATM” while the darkened frontage appears to tell a different story.
The evening light briefly illuminates the building’s worn surfaces, faded lettering and 1939 date stone. Signs of former prosperity remain embedded in the architecture, but their original confidence has diminished.
The Recession considers the contradictions found within post-industrial American towns: access without security, promises without permanence and institutions that remain visible long after their wider purpose has receded.
