Las Vegas is normally photographed through neon, spectacle and excess. In ‘Vegas, Offstage’, the city is viewed from the quieter surroundings of a car park.
A white BMW sits beneath an expansive desert sky while the signs and façades of Harrah’s and the Venetian rise behind it. Stripped of crowds and nightlife, the architecture takes on a strangely theatrical quality: the performance remains, but the audience has disappeared.
The photograph considers the distance between a city’s projected image and the everyday structures that sustain it. Luxury, imitation and ordinary routine occupy the same frame.
